The would is an auxiliary of the verb "modal" tense that is used in the conditionals. The "would like" would be used in dialogues to ask for something and it means "I would like..." and the "would rather" means "I would prefer..." and it is also very similar to would like but the latter is often used a lot in dialogues when ordering something in a restaurant.
